Redskin Quarterback Leads 80-Yard Drive, Passes for Early Touchdown
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 26 (AP)- Sonny Jurgenson passed for a touchdown and Charlie Gogolak kicked two second-half field goals today to lead the Washington Redskins of the National Football League to a 13-7 victory over the Boston Patriots of the American League before an exhibition game crowd of 15,523 at Harvard's Stadium.
Jurgensen, who has been troubled with calcium deposits in his right shoulder, gave his ailing arm a stiff test. He played three quarters as the Redskins gave the N.F.L. a 7-3 advantage in games played against rival A.F.L. teams in the first year of preseason meetings.
Jurgensen, an 11-year pro from Duke, took charge by leading Washington on an 80-yard touchdown drive the first time the Redskins had the ball. The march, helped by a holding penalty against Boston, took eight plays. Jurgensen ran for 7 yards and threw passes covering 6 and 33 yards to Charlie Taylor before lobbing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Mitchell.
The Patriots tied the score, 7-7, by going 96 yards for a second-period touchdown despite a 15-yard offensive pass interference call. Babe Parilli hit Art Graham for two passes covering 80 yards before throwing to Jim Whalen in the end zone for the final 20 yards.
A 43-yard return of the kickoff starting the second half by John Love helped the Redskins break the deadlock en route to their third straight exhibition game victory. Jurgensen completed two passes to set up Gogolak's 22-yard soccer-style kick for a field goal. Gogolak also booted a 21-yard field goal for the final 3 points with less than two minutes remaining.
The error-filled game was marred by penalties. The Patriots lost 148 yards on 14 infractions, while the Redskins were penalized seven times for 74 yards. There also were several penalties declined.
The Redskins who had rolled up 38 points in two previous victories over N.F.L. rivals- the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants- were held pretty much in check by the Boston defense although the Patriots were handicapped by the loss of their all-A.F.L middle linebacker, Nick Buoniconti, who is hospitalized with a kidney ailment and an ankle injury.
The Patriots, who open their A.F.L. campaign at Denver Sept. 3, finished the exhibition game season with a 1-3 won-lost record. The offense managed only three touchdowns in the four games.
