Oilers Defeat Bears, 19-17, On Beathard-Haik Aerial

HOUSTON (AP) - Quarterback Pete Beathard hit Mac Haik with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:26 remaining in the game Friday night to give Houston a 19-17 exhibition football victory over the Chicago Bears.

The touchdown pass wiped out a 17-12 Chicago lead, which the Bears had gained some two minutes earlier on Gale Sayers' 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Only about 20 seconds earlier, the Oilers had taken the lead, 12-10, on rookie kicker Roy Gerela's 30-yard field goal.

Beathard moved the Oilers from their own 20 for the winning touchdown, hitting Haik in the extreme right corner of the endzone with the scoring strike.

Houston scored a safety late in the second period when Chicago quarterback Virgil Carter was tackled in the end zone by Glen Woods.

Kenny Houston, raced 99 yards with a missed field goal attempt in the third period to put the Oilers ahead 9-0

Chicago threatened continually in the first half but was unable to score until Ben Bull's one-yard scoring run in the third period.

Mack Percival, who accounted for 21 points in three previous games, missed on three field goal attempts in the first half and made only one of six trys the entire game.

Houston used three quarterbacks, Beathard, Don Trull, and Bob Davis, with only Beathard, who came in early in the second half, the only one able to move the team consistently.

The victory gave Houston a 2-1 exhibition record and the loss evened Chicago at 2-2.
