Stenerud Hero as Chiefs Nip Vikings, 13-10
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL (AP)- Jan Stenerud's second field goal with 47
seconds to play handed Kansas City of the American Football League a
13-10 exhibition football victory over the National Football League
Minnesota Vikings Saturday night.
Stenerud's winning 15-yard field goal climaxed a 38-yard drive by the
Chiefs following an unusual clipping penalty called against Vikings
kicker Bobby Walden after he punted from the Minnesota 14-yard line.
The penalty gave Kansas City the ball on the Viking 38, and the Chiefs
moved swiftly down to the Minnesota nine before Stenerud booted his
fielder for the triumph. Mike Garrett, the Chiefs'
workhorse with 90 yards on 26 carries, gained 25 yards on six tries on
Kansas City's drive to set up the kick.
The Vikings had tied the game 10-10 midway through the fourth quarter on
Fred Cox's 32-yard field goal. That came after Minnesota had a 23-yard
touchdown pass nullified on an offensive pass interference penalty
against Gene Washington, who caught what appeared to be a scoring pass
from Gary Cuozzo.
Stenerud kicked a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to give
Kansas City 10-7 lead.
Vikings quarterback Joe Kapp scrambled around Kansas City and ran 21
yards to give the Vikings an early second-quarter lead. A completed pass
from Kapp to Washington gave the Vikings an extra point for the 7- 0
lead. Kicking for an extra point was not allowed.
A 40-yard touchdown from Len Dawson to Frank Pitts enabled the Chiefs to
catch up in the third quarter. The pass climaxed a 68-yard drive by the
Chiefs.
Kansas City suffered a
setback in the victory as fullback, Curtis McClinton fractured a
cheekbone in the third quarter, which threatened to end his season.
A crowd of 46,228 witnessed
the game played in Minneapolis.
