ST. LOUIS, Aug. 29 (UPI) The Kansas City Chiefs won their fifth consecutive game tonight, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 31-21, as Len Dawson tossed two touchdown passes, Mike Garrett plunged for a third and Jan Stenerud kicked three field goals.

 

Charles Johnson, the Cardinal quarterback, was removed near the end of the third period after suffering a blow on the head. Chuck Latourette, a kick returner, was taken to a hospital with an injured knee.

 

Ed Lothamer of the Chiefs, a defensive tackle, injured his right hand in the hard hitting game. Ed Roseborough, a rookie quarterback, rallied the Cardinals to two touchdowns in the final period, one coming on a 49-yard pass to John Gilliam and the other on a 16-yard run by Roy Shivers. Roseborough completed six passes in nine attempts for 117 yards.

 

Johnny Roland's 18-yard touchdown run put the Cardinals ahead at 3:05 of the first period. Before the period ended, though, runs by Robert Holmes and Garrett set up Stenerud's first field goal.

 

Stenerud added a field goal in the second period. Before the half ended, the Chiefs took the lead when Jim Kearney in­tercepted a pass and returned it 18 yards to the Cardinal 13. Garrett eventually scored from the 1.

 

Dawson's 15-yard pass to Gloster Richardson, Stenerud's third field goal and Dawson's 13-yard pass to Jerrel Wilson completed the Chiefs' scoring.

 

Dawson completed 11 of 20 passes for a total of 131 yards. Holmes paced the Chiefs' running attack with eight carries for 75 yards. Garrett and Ed Podolak contributed 51 yards each.
