BENGALS TOPPLE
STEELERS, 19 TO 3
Warren's Aerials Pace New
Club to First Victory
MORGANTOWN, W. Va (AP)-
Cincinnati's Dewey Warren set up three touchdowns with his sharp passing
and the infant Bengals surprised the punchless Pittsburgh Steelers 19-3
yesterday for their first victory.
Warren, who completed 12 of 21 passes for 268 yards, drove the new
American Football League Bengals to a touchdown the first time they had
the ball and later set up two other scores with long completions to Bob
Trumpy and Rod Sherman,
Paul Robinson ran over twice from one yard away for touchdowns, and Tom
Smiley scored from the two.
The Cincinnati victory gave AFL clubs a 10-5 edge over the National
League in interleague exhibition games.
Pittsburgh, which played without both its regular wide receivers and
both regular running backs- all sidelined with injuries- crossed
midfield only once on its own power and never advanced past Cincinnati's
26.
Kent Nix, the Steelers' quarterback, completed only five of 20 passes
for 64 yards.
Pittsburgh's only points came on a 33-yard field goal by Bill Shockley
late in the first half.
Warren clicked on three straight passes for 44 yards as Cincinnati
marched 64 yards in 10 plays on its first possession
The big gainers were a 19-yarder to Sherman and a 16-yarder to Trumpy
when Pittsburgh was caught in a safety blitz. Robinson scored from the
one.
On the final play of the first quarter, Warren teamed with Trumpy for 71
yards to the Steelers' nine, setting up a two-yard plunge by Smiley
three plays later.
The final Cincinnati touchdown came early in the fourth quarter. After a
short Steeler punt, Warren hit Sherman for 45 yard's and Robinson again
scored from the one.
Pittsburgh did not get past midfield in the second half.
