Steelers 'Boot' Chargers for 16-7 Victory

 


 

SAN DIEGO (UP1)- A tenacious defense and Mike Clark's three field goals gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a 16-7 triumph over the San Diego Chargers.
 

Clark booted a 38-yard field goal the first time the Steelers got the ball and followed with kicks of 34 and 16 yards in the third quarter. Quarterback Bill Nelsen threw an 11-yard touchdown pan to Marsh Cropper, also in the third period, to open up the game after a 3-0 halftime score and give the Steelers their second win in four preseason games.
 

The Chargers, who dropped their third straight game to an NFL opponent, were stymied by in alert Steelers defense which recovered two fumbles and intercepted three passes. Defensive back Paul Martha recovered one fumble to set up a touchdown and ran back an interception 51 yards.
 

San Diego quarterback John Hadl completed only two of 10 passes for 44 yards and was replaced by rookie Kay Stephenson late in the third quarter.
