Cards Defeat Namath, Jets, 13-6
ST. LOUIS (UP!) — Charley
Johnson tossed a touchdown pass and Jim Bakken kicked two field goals to
give the St. Louis football Cardinals a 13-6 victory over Joe Namath and
the world champion New York Jets in an exhibition game Saturday . night
before 50,371 fans. Johnson's 26-yard touchdown
pass to Jackie Smith came at the start of the fourth period. The Cardinals and Jets
exchanged field goals in the first three periods. Bakken kicking a
40-yard goal with 65 seconds left in the second period, and Jim Turner
tying the score with a 24-yard field goal with less than nine minutes
left in the third period. Bakken added a 22-yard field
goal with less than four minutes left in the same third period and
Turner added his second field goal of 45-yards in the fourth period. All-America Roger Wehrli of
Missouri, in the lineup for the first time with the Cardinals, dogged
the heels of Jets' receiver Don Maynard. In the first period Wehrli
intercepted a Namath pass intended for Maynard on the Cardinal 2. In the
second period, Wehrli again kept close to Maynard on a Namath pass which
was incomplete at the Cardinal goal line. Namath played the first half
and quarterbacks Babe Parilli and Al Woodall finished the second half
for the Jets. Namath completed 6 of 18 passes for 55 yards, but many of
his passes were dropped. Johnson was forced to play
the entire game when quarterback Jim Hart was sidelined with the flu and
a 102 degree temperature. Johnson completed 10 of 20 passes for 97
yards. |
