The 1960 College All-Star Game

In a near repeat of the previous year’s performance, the Baltimore Colts succeeded again in defeating their collegiate counterparts by a wide margin. Otto Graham was back to coach his third team of All-Stars including Don Meredith of Southern Methodist, Jim Leo of Cincinnati (MVP), Don Stallings of North Carolina and Prentice Gautt of Oklahoma. The Colts gained 414 total yards in this game compared to 121 total yards by the All-Stars, which pretty much told the story. 70,000 people turned out to watch at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 12, 1960.

The victory for the professionals came off the passing of Johnny Unitas with 3 touchdown passes in the first half and Steve Myhra, kicking specialist for the Colts, had three field goals to his name by the end of the evening. Then, when Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb sacked George Izo of Notre Dame in the end zone, the Colts ended their scoring for the night with a total of 32 points.

Unlike the previous year, the All-Stars did manage to score in this game. On the first play of the fourth quarter substitute quarterback, Don Meredith of Southern Methodist spotted Prentice Gautt of Oklahoma in the clear and hit him with a screen pass. Gautt ran 60 yards for the score and Bob Khayat of Mississippi kicked the extra point. The final score was 32-7.
