On
July 27, 1973, a crowd of 54,103 spectators, the lowest number to attend
since the height of the war years, gathered to watch at Soldier Field in
Chicago as the All-Stars of college football met to compete against the
champions of the NFL, the Miami Dolphins. John McKay, coach at USC, was
chosen to lead the All-Stars in this endeavor with a team that gave the
Dolphins, undefeated the previous season, a “tenacious fight.” They
dominated most of the game despite its outcome. His team included such
players as Charles Young of USC, Ray Guy ( MVP)
of Southern Mississippi, John Hannah of Alabama, Bert Jones of Louisiana
State, Terry Metcalf of Long Beach State, Chuck Foreman of Miami,
Florida, John Matuszak of Tampa, and Richard Glover of Nebraska.
Scoring came first for the Dolphins via a 3-yard sweep by Larry Csonka
after a 60-yard drive in 10 plays following the opening kickoff. Garo
Yepremian kicked the extra point. Late in the second period, the
All-Stars drove to the Miami 1-yard line but three attempts to score a
touchdown failed setting up a 10-yard field goal by Ray Guy. The third
quarter produced no scoring for either team, which may have been due in
part to the downpour that occurred at half-time, soaking the field.
Miami began a drive early in the fourth quarter, which ended with yet
another Csonka smash over left tackle for 7 yards and a touchdown. The
game ended with the score Dolphins 14, All-Stars 3.
