Texas Tech Fight Song

JACKSONVILLE, Fla (UPI) Texas Tech quarterback Joe Barnes passed for two touchdowns, one a 79-yard bomb to Lawrence Williams (video), and scored another himself to lead the Red Raiders to a 28-19 Gator Bowl victory Saturday night over the Tennessee Vols.

Barnes, a senior who led the Raiders to a 10-1 regular season, ran and passed for 231 yards. His touchdown run, a six yard keeper, climaxed a 57 yard drive with 4 56 left in the first period. His long touchdown pass to Williams, which found the Texas Tech receiver wide open at the Tennessee 35, came with 5:16 elapsed in the second period and gave the Raiders a 14-0 lead

Barnes' other touchdown pass, a seven-yard strike to tight end Andre Tillman, came with 2:26 left in the third period after Tennessee had cut the margin to 14-10. Tennessee had closed the margin to 21-19 early in the final period and had a chance to go ahead late in the period but Ricky Townsend, who kicked two field goals earlier, missed a 32-yard attempt with 3:36 left to play.

The Raiders quickly iced the game when fullback James Mosley ripped off a Gator Bowl record 70-yard run to carry the ball to the Tennessee 10 (video) and freshman Larry Isaac scored from three yards out two plays later with Texas Tech's fourth touchdown (video).

The Gator Bowl had been billed as a duel between Barnes and all-Southeastern Conference quarterback Condredge Holloway. Holloway gained 201 yards, 194 by passing, and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to tailback Haskell Stanback, who had scored earlier on a four yard run, but the Tennessee star was unable to carry the Vols in during two late fourth period drives.

The Vols, three point underdogs after a 6-3 season, trailed 14-3 at halftime. Their lone first half score came on a 30-yard field goal by Townsend with 6 03 left in the half, after David Page had recovered a Texas Tech fumble at the Raiders' 35 yard line.

The Vols narrowed the gap to 14-10 midway through the third period when Stanback, who gained 95 yards rushing, ripped off runs of 34, 7, 3 and 4 yards in a 54-yard drive, the last for the touchdown.

But the 11th ranked Raiders, who lost only to eighth-ranked Texas during the regular season, came storming back, going 77 yards in 11 plays, to widen their lead to 21-10 on the Barnes-Tillman pass.

Tennessee scored following the ensuing kickoff on a 37-yard Townsend field goal and closed the gap to two points early in the fourth period on the Holloway-Stanback pass following a 62-yard punt return by second team All-America defensive back Eddie Brown.

The Vols tried to go for two points to tie the score at 21-all, but Holloway's pass was off target.

The next time Tennessee got the ball, at its own 20, the Vols marched all the way to the Texas Tech 11-yard line where they had a second and one.

But Holloway lost three yards on the next play and Mitchell Grabbitt dropped his third down pass in the end zone.

Barnes and Stanback were voted the most valuable players for their respective teams.
