The Junior College National Champion has historically been determined by the final poll, with the number one team being crowned national champion. The rating system and final poll have been in effect since 1956 with Coffyville Community College of Kansas declared the first national Champion. There have been a myriad of postseason bowl games pitting strong programs regionally throughout the years.

The following is a synopsis of the national championship picture for the last five years. By virtue of an undefeated season and a 31-19 victory over Butler County Community College (KS), Georgia Military College was voted to the top position in the final NJCAA football poll for 2001. In 2002, Joliet Junior College (IL) defeated Georgia Military, 24-14, in the Sea Island Company Golden Isles Bowl Classic at Brunswick, Georgia to win the 2002 NJCAA Football Championship. Butler County (KS) won the national championship in 2003 with unanimous first-place votes. The Grizzlies defeated Dixie State 14-10 in the Dixie Rotary Bowl at St. George, Utah. For Butler, it was the fourth national championship third in the previous six years. They took the top spot in 1981, 1998, 1999. Pearl River Community College (MS) was tops the final 2004 NJCAA Football Poll. The Wildcats defeated regular-season #1, Butler County, 35-14, in the Dalton Defenders Bowl at Coffeyville, KS. In 2005, Glendale Community College (AZ) finished the season 11-0 with a 50-48 win over Grand Rapids Community College (Mich.) in the Valley of the Sun Bowl at Phoenix, AZ. It was the third football national championship for the Gauchos. In 2006, the number one and two teams in the nation met in the Pilgrim’s Pride Bowl at Mount Pleasant, TX. Number 1 ranked, Blinn College of Texas, defeated #2 Pearl River Community College of Mississippi.
