Stanford Fight Song

HONOLULU, Jan. 2 (AP) Stanford's Indians slammed across six touchdowns in the fourth period today to overwhelm the University of Hawaii, 74-20, in the Pineapple Bowl football game.

Stanford finished 6-3-1 in 1949. There big wins came against USC and UCLA. They were easily beaten by Michigan and conference champion, California. The fought to a mid-season tie against eventual Orange Bowl champion, Santa Clara. Hawaii finished won a string of five straight games in the heart of the season and finished 6-2. They lost to Texas Western (UTEP) early in the season and to powerful Pacific and Eddie LeBaron, 75-0, in the season’s last game.

In the Pineapple Bowl, the visiting Pacific Coast Conference team spurted to a 20-0 lead in the first period and appeared to be on their way to a blowout. But, the Rainbows scored twice in the second period and again in the third. Stanford led at halftime, 28-13.

At halftime, the Indians received a fiery pep talk for Coach Marchie Schwartz, but it seemed to be of no avail. Hawaii's made its best offensive showing of the day early in the third period. Halfback Jimmie Asato broke through right guard for 42 yards and a touchdown. Sol Kaulukukui kicked the extra point and the Stanford lead was whittled to 26-20.

But the Indians went back to work and quickly rolled to a retaliatory touchdown and launched their second half barrage. Included in the six fourth quarter touchdowns was a scoring pass from Emery Mitchell to defensive stalwart Davey Field late in the game. It was Field’s first Stanford touchdown. The Indians topped off this splurge with End Bill McColl passing 59 yards to Holbrook Boruck for a touchdown.

In all, touchdowns were scored for Stanford by Mitchell, Boruck, Field, Rupe Andrews, Dick Horn, Gary Kerkorian, Ken Rose and Bill DeYoung.

The thunderous last-period attack was witnessed by 18,000 fans who sat under cloudy skies shivering in a 30-mile-an-hour wind. In the final two games of the season, Hawaii was outscored 145-20 by two strong California programs.
