The Pioneer Bowl was an annual NCAA Division II bowl game played in
Wichita Falls, Texas from 1971 to 1982. The game was held as the
Division II Midwest Region Championship from 1971 to 1978. The first
Division 1-AA national championship game was held in Wichita Falls in
1978 and replaced the Pioneer Bowl that year and the following season.
The Division 1-AA national championship game was held in Orlando, FL in
1979 and Sacramento, CA in 1980. But, it returned to Wichita Falls as
the Pioneer Bowl in 1981 and 1982. The Pioneer Bowl name was dropped
following the 1982 game.
