The Salad Bowl was played at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1948 to 1952. Mountain and Western football was generally not showcased in the early days of the game. A bowl game provided attention and a spotlight for schools in the region. This was much like the Pineapple Bowls in Hawaii.

The Salad Bowl was discontinued in 1952 after five games. The bowl movement would come to the region again in the 1970’s with the advent of the Fiesta Bowl, which in its early years featured Arizona State and WAC teams. Today, it it has grown into a major BCS bowl.
