PHOENIX, Ariz., (AP)- Drake University of De Moines, Iowa, stopped two University of Arizona last quarter scoring threats- one on the one-yard line- to win a 14-13 Salad bowl football victory here Saturday.


The winners scored both of their touchdowns in the first half and then were forced to hang on during the second as Arizona’s offense ate up yardage.


A crowd estimated at 17,500 fans watched the intersectional contest.


Trailing by the single point, Arizona drove from its own nine to the Drake 11 in the final period. A fumble ended the threat, but a blocked Drake kick gave the home state club another chance from the eight.


Drake held and took over on its one yard line.


The first score came in the opening period with ten minutes of the game gone. Guard Arvil Stille recovered a fumble on the Arizona 33. Nine plays later fullback Frank Metzger scored from the three, and tackle Dick Steere added the extra point from placement.


A fumble gave Arizona the chance to even the count. Tackle Harry Varner pounced on the ball dropped by Drake halfback Joe Makarewicz on the Iowans' 15. Eddie Wolgast and Charlie Hall divided the ball carrying chores with the former capitalizing from two yards out.

Drake's big break came late in the period when Arizona elected to pass when deep in its own territory. Tom Bienemann, stellar end, deflected the ball as it left Wolgast's hands. Fullback Floyd Miller grabbed it and went 14 yards to score. Steere again converted.


The final score came after 10 minutes of the third quarter.


Max Salisbury broke up a pitchout play and Varner recovered halfback Jimmy Baer's fumble on the Drake 29. Wolgast and Hall again carried the offense load with Wolgast again scoring the six points. Tackett's attempted conversion failed.


The fiesty Midwesterners were outgained by Arizona,355 yards to 206,but the Cats had two fumbles and an interception that ended any hope for a victory.


Drake carried the luck on this afternoon. Tackett, one of the Border Conference’s top extra-point kickers,hit the left upright with his final PAT attempt, the ball bounced away from the goal posts, and Drake escaped with a one-point margin.


Wolgast’s 133 yards rushing on the day was eight yards more than Drake’s team total.


Al Wolgast carries behind the blocking of William Peterson (22) and Charlie Hall (55) for one of his two touchdowns.
