Kicking specialist Bob White booted three field goals and a conversion for 10 of the Razorbacks' points. His field goals were for 34, 24 and 31 yards.
The loss dashed the dark horse hopes of Georgia, the Southeastern Conference champion, for the mythical national championship to be decided after all the bowl results are in.
Arkansas quarterback Bill Montgomery, a cool sophomore, had a field day picking apart the Georgia secondary with passes to Dicus, a 6-foot-l, 180 pounder from Garland, Tex., and another of Coach Frank Broyles' crew of first-year men.
The Razorbacks gave Georgia three golden scoring chances but the Bulldogs couldn't cash in on them. Among Arkansas' defensive heroes were tackles Rick Kersey and Gordon McNulty and linebacker Cliff Powell.
Kersey forced a fumble by Georgia fullback Brad Johnson at the Hogs' goal line- the closest Georgia got to scoring a touchdown.
The Razorback front four, all small and fast, constantly harassed Georgia quarterback Mike Cavan, a sophomore, and his junior stand-in, Donnie Hampton. Georgia fumbled five times with Cavan coughing up the ball on three occasions. Arkansas intercepted three of Georgia's passes,
Arkansas' touchdown came on the first play of the second quarter as the Razorbacks found a weakness in the Georgia pass defense and set up Dicus. Montgomery connected on three straight tosses, the final one going 27 yards to Dicus for the touchdown. Dicus, who had a step on Georgia All-American safety Jake Scott, caught the ball at the four and raced into the end zone.
During the first half, Montgomery completing nine consecutive throws, equaling the Sugar Bowl mark set by Tulsa's Glenn Dobbs in 1943.
Georgia was given a scoring opportunity midway in the second period after the safety. The Razorbacks got off a bad kick with the Bulldogs faking it on the Arkansas 44, but Georgia, couldn't move the ball.
In the second period, Cavan connected on three consecutive passes to put the Bulldogs at the Arkansas 32. With five seconds showing on the clock, they tried a field goal but Jim McCullough's kick was short.
Georgia had no success in coming up with the big third down plays. Sixteen times in the game the Bulldogs faced third down situations, needing anywhere from four to 16 yards. They made it only three times. Arkansas didn't have much better success, but came up with the big plays on occasion- primarily on the Montgomery to Dicus passing combination.
Arkansas' Jerry Moore intercepted two Georgia passes, including one at his own goal line, to snuff out a Bulldog drive in the final seconds.
Montgomery completed 17 of his 30 tosses for 185 yards while Cavan hit on nine of 22 for 103 yards. The game's leading rusher was Johnson with 45 yards on 12 carries.
