Sun Bowl 1964
Georgia 7 Texas Tech 0
|
|
The defense limited Tech to just one first down- that on 15-yard holding penalty- in the first three quarters as Tech's All-America Donnie Anderson was hobbled with just 19 yards on seven carries.
Georgia grabbed its 7-0 margin in the second quarter with the score set up on a 52-yard swing pass from quarterback Preston Ridlehuber to halfback Fred Barber.
The 194-pound Barber pulled hamstring muscle on the scamper and hobbled to the Tech six yard line. Three plays later fullback Frank Lankewicz barreled over from the two. Bobby Etter kicked his 17th straight conversion this season.
Tech mounted one offensive threat in the fourth quarter, driving to the Georgia 18 where the Raiders lost the ball on downs.
Raider Ronnie Reeger recovered a fumble by Ridlehuber on the next play at the Bulldog 17, but Tech promptly lost it as Georgia's Vance Evans intercepted a Tom Wilson pass.
The Bulldog defense never let Tech get past its own 39-yard line in the first half and limited the Red Raider offense to just 28 yards on 15 plays in the first half and 105 yards on 33 plays in the second.
The Georgia Bulldogs put Tech's back to the wall from the opening kickoff. Georgia drove 79 yards in 22 plays to the Tech one foot line, where it lost the ball on downs.
Ridlehuber, who started behind sophomore Lynn Hughes, kept the Tech secondary confused as he sent halfbacks Barber and Bob Taylor inside for consistent short yardage and crossed up the defense with his timely rollout passing.
Ridlehuber, voted the outstanding player in the game, paced the Georgia offense with 87 yards on 19 carries and completed four of his five passes for 84 yards.
With 210-pound defensive guard Joel Darden leading the charge, Georgia's defense kept Tech from earning a first down, other than the penalty gift until early in the fourth quarter.
Tech’s defense took up the slack after the offense could not move, holding the Bulldogs once on the one-foot line and recovering fumbles on the Tech 11 and 14-yard lines in the third quarter.
Georgia continued its ball control style in the second half, permitting Tech just nine plays in the third quarter and 25 in the fourth.
Georgia drove to the Tech 11 midway in the third period but a fumble by Lankewicz was recovered by Raider James Henkel, stopping the thrust on the 11.
The Raiders stopped another Bulldog assault on the 14 with linebacker Leo Lowrey recovering a Taylor fumble on the 14. The victory was Georgia's sixth in nine bowl appearances and was Tech's seventh loss in nine post-season games.
