Georgia Tech Fight Song

EL PASO, Tex. (AP) – Using clutch defensive plays to stop Texas Tech's vaunted running attack, Georgia Tech made its first visit to the Sun Bowl football game a 17-9 success yesterday.

The Yellow Jackets dashed Texas Tech's second half effort, which had overcome all but one of a 10-point deficit, when reserve tailback Kevin McNamara bulled in from two yards out with 1:44 remaining in the game.

The clincher was set up by linebacker Bill Flowers' recovery of a Red Raider fumble at the Texas Tech 25, from which point it took six plays to score.

Senior quarterback Jack Williams got the Georgians off fast following the opening kickoff, directing a 62-yard march which Bob Healy climaxed on the 11th play by going into the endzone from two yards out.

The Yellow Jackets left the field with a 10-0 lead at halftime following Jack Moore's 21-yard field goal with 42 seconds left.

After penetrating past midfield only once in the first half, Texas Tech made a dramatic about-face in the third period. Highlighted by a 50-yard left end sprint to the Georgia Tech 25 by halfback Larry Hargrave, the Red Raiders marched 85 yards to score in seven plays on a seven-yard burst by halfback Doug McCutchen.

Texas Tech linebacker Donald Rivers cut the margin to one point when he climbed over a blocker and slapped down a Georgia Tech punt, the ball rolling out of the endzone for a safety.

A bid to take the lead early in the fourth quarter was thwarted when a 26-yard field goal attempt by Dickie Ingram sailed wide to the right.

Flowers, who made eight unassisted tackles in addition to recovering the fumble, was named the game's most valuable player and teammate Rock Perdoni, the All- American defensive tackle who was in on 13 stops, the outstanding lineman.

The rival coaches agreed the missed field goal was the turning point.

"Had we made it, our boys would have held them," said Jim Carlen of Texas Tech.

Georgia Tech's Bud Carson said his team's inability to roll up more points in the first half made the missed fielder more important than perhaps it should have been.

"It was the best first half we've played all year," he said. "We had three good chances to score, but we could only push it across once."

"We were lucky to come out of that first half alive," observed Carlen, whose Red Raiders lost the ball six times on fumbles and pass interceptions.
