Fourth year Iowa State head coach Johnny Majors and his Cyclone
football squad lost only three games in 1971, to Nebraska, Oklahoma and
Colorado, the nation's number one, two and three teams, respectively.
ISU finished 8-3, 17th in the nation in the final regular season polls
and earned their first ever bowl bid. LSU came into the Sun Bowl with a
record of 8-3, ranked 14th in the nation, and with a huge late season
win over Notre Dame. The 1971 LSU defense allowed the fewest yards in
the nation. The game was played before a sellout Sun Bowl crowd and
national TV audience.
EL
PASO, Tex. (AP) - Bert Jones picked apart Iowa State's young defensive
secondary for three second-half touchdown passes and ran for another
touchdown Saturday to lead Louisiana State to a 33-15 football victory
over the Cyclones in the 37th annual Sun Bowl.
The loss was heartbreaker for Iowa State, which was making its bowl
debut after 76 years of college football. Jones, who threw just nine
touchdown passes during the regular season, completed only two of five
aerials in a lightly played first half.
But with LSU leading 6-3 moments after the half, he went to work. He
connected on a 37-yard scoring pass to splitback Andy Hamilton to give
the Tigers a 13-3 lead.
Moments later Jones hit split end Gerald Keigley from 21 yards out to
give LSU a commanding 19-3 lead.
Iowa State refused to quit. The Cyclones, hurt throughout the game by
four lost fumbles and an interception, came back to tighten it up on a
pair of touchdown passes by quarterback Dean Carlson. The junior signal
caller looked up with halfback Larry Marquardt on a 30-yard scoring
play, then hit tight end Keith Krepfle from a yard out to make it 19-15.
But Jones calmly put the game away, hitting end Jay Michaelson from six
yards out for one touchdown and running six yards for the final score.
Jones, named the game's outstanding player, finished the contest with 12
completions in 18 attempts for 227 yards to outduel Iowa State's
Carlson. Carlson completed 18 of 32 for 230 yards.
Playing in a steady drizzle in the first half, LSU took a quick 6-0 lead
on a pair of 39-yard field goals by Michaelson.
Iowa State made it 6-3 on the first play of the second quarter on Reggie
Shoemake's 32-yard field goal.
It was an emotional game- one that saw' several tempers flare ups. LSU
starting offensive guard Mike Demarie and Iowa State linebacker Keith
Schroeder were thumbed out of the game in the third quarter after a
swinging and pushing match.
Mistakes played a major role in the first half.
Iowa State fumbled the first two times it had the ball and a poor snap
from center caused a Cyclone punt to go only eight yards deep in Iowa
State territory.
However, LSU was only able to come through with a pair of field goals
despite their many advantages.
Shoemake's field goal was set up by an LSU fumble at the Tiger 30 yard
line.
The second half was different.
LSU, held to just four first downs in the first two quatters, began to
roll.
The Bengals took the second half kickoff and breezed 63 yards in nine
plays, with Jones' 37-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton coming just three
and a half minutes into the half.
LSU took advantage of still another Iowa State fumble to score its
second touchdown.
After Carlson fumbled a dipsy-doodle pass from tailback George Amundson
at the Tiger 39-yard line, Jones marched his squad 61 yards in eight
plays. The last was a 21-yard scoring pass to Keigley, who was wide open
in the far left corner of the Iowa State end zone.
Carlson, who was very effective passing in the first half when he
completed seven of 12 passes, brought Iowa back.
He hit Amundson on a 16 yard pass over the middle. LSU was called for a
personal foul, moving the ball to the Tiger 46 yard line. Carlson then
hit end Ike Harris over the middle for 14 yards then found Marquardt at
the LSU 10 with a quick look-in aerial. Marquardt got away from one
tackler and sped for the touchdown.
Less than two minutes later Iowa State scored again. LSU fullback Allen
Shorey fumbled on a run up the middle and Iowa State safety Dave McCurry
recovered at the Tiger 35-yard line.
Carlson quickly hit Krepfle on a 32-yard pass at the LSU three yard
line. Then on fourth and goal at the LSU one, Carlson zipped a scoring
strike to Krepfle over the middle.
The Cyclones' try for a two point conversion was thwarted by LSU's
defense.
That was as close as Iowa could get, as Jones hit Michaelson from six
yards for one touchdown and ran for another to give LSU its ninth bowl
victory in 17 outings.
