The
1980 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl was
played before 48,060 fans at
Aloha Stadium in Honolulu,
Hawaii. It was the first
time in the 30-year history
of the Pro Bowl that the
game was played in a non-NFL
city.
The scoring began with
matching first period field
goals by Mark Moseley of
Washington for the NFC and
Toni Fritsch of Houston for the
AFC. Mosely hit from 37 yard
and Fritsch from 19. In the
second quarter, Chuck Muncie
of the Saints carried the ball in from one
yard out to give the NFC the
lead. The AFC responded
when Pittsburgh's Terry
Bradshaw hit Cleveland's
Mike Pruitt with a one-yard
touchdown pass. The NFC then
scored a pair of touchdowns
when the Saints' Archie Manning
threw a 13 yard touchdown
pass to Dallas' Drew
Hill and Muncie tossed a 25 yard option pass
to Tony Hill of the Cowboys for a 23-10
halftime advantage.
The NFC scored first in the
second half when
Philadelphia's Wally Henry
returned a punt 80-yards,
effectively putting the game
out of reach at
30-10. Houston's Earl Campbell scored
on a 2 yard run and Fritsch added a field goal
to make the score 30-20 at
the end of three. The teams
traded scores in the 4th
quarter on an 11 yard Muncie
run for the NFC and a 1 yard
Earl Campbell run for the
Americans. The final score
was 37-27.
San Diego's Dan
Fouts completed 11 of 23
passes for 154 yards in a
losing cause. Chuck Muncie
earned player of the game
honors for contributing to
three touchdowns. Two
scoring records were set- 37
points by the NFC, eclipsing
the 33 by the AFC in 1973,
and the 64 points by both
teams, surpassing the 61
scored in 1973. Commenting
on the recent success of the
NFC in the Pro Bowl, NFC
head coach Tom Landry said,
"I can remember when we
seemed to lose this one just
about every year, too. Well,
now that we have this one
under control, it would be
nice to get the same thing
going with the Super Bowl.”
