Joe Geri was a quarterback-running back who played four seasons for the
Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals from 1949 to 1952 in the
National Football League. He was a two time Pro Bowler in 1950 and 1951.
He is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. A native of
Phoenixville, PA, he played halfback at Georgia in 1948. Geri led the
Southeastern Conference with 90 points and set what was then a league
record by converting 92.3 percent (36 of 39) of his extra-point
attempts. He was a third-team selection on the Associated Press all-S.E.C.
squad.
Geri played college football in the University of Georgia and was
drafted in the 4th round of the 1949 NFL Draft by the Steelers. Geri
also played punter in his short professional career. In 1950 he was the
N.F.L.'s third-leading passer and runner, the sixth-leading punter and
the ninth-leading scorer. He was one of four players to be unanimously
selected to the All-Pro team that season. Geri played just two more
seasons, one each with the Steelers and Chicago Cardinals, before going
into coaching.
