There is little question when you measure Roman Gabriel's stature with
the public that he has to be labeled a superstar. But the scouts don't
rate him that way, although there's no denying his talent.
What is somewhat surprising is that the scouts' assessment is made
despite the fact that Gabriel has broken most of the club records held
by two previous Rams' quarterbacks, Hall of Earners' Bob Waterfield and
Norm Van Brocklin, although admittedly in another era.
What the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Gabriel has to offer as his major asset is
durability- durability that enabled him in his 10th season to keep
throwing passes despite elbow and shoulder problems and to keep rolling
back into the pocket despite knee problems.
No matter what, Gabriel continues to play and play well. He rides his
ability to react under pressure as well as anyone in the game to
continuing success, although his throwing ability gets him only a grade
of 3 from the pro scouts.
In rating Gabriel in reaction under pressure, the scouts gave him an
almost-perfect 4.5. The swarthy former North Carolina State star has
obviously learned how to avoid danger when it rears its defensive head.
That asset, as well as Gabriel's still-youthful age of 32 and the fact
that no successor is on the horizon, will keep Gabriel in his No. 1
spot.
