Despite the misfortunes that befell the Buffalo team during the 1971
season, Dennis Shaw received significantly high grades from the scouts.
The continued growth almost virtually guaranteed by added experience
assures Shaw a shot at climbing into the outstanding category.
The 6-foot-2, 209-pound product of San Diego State, who has only two
seasons behind him, suffered most in the scouts' ratings in measuring
his ability to read defenses, receiving an average of only 2.
The scouts, however, pointed out that young quarterbacks rarely receive
a higher grade in that department and that Shaw's ability to recognize
defensive formations thrown at him will increase with experience.
Possibly Shaw's most surprising rating was the 3 for throwing ability.
Possessor of what appears to be a strong arm, the rating indicates the
confident Californian still has several things to learn about
controlling his passes and anticipating his receivers.
There appears to be a unique quality about Shaw that impresses the
scouts for whenever he and Pittsburgh's Terry Bradshaw are mentioned,
Bradshaw gets all the oohs and aahs. But Shaw's rating is almost as
high, indicating a future that could take the both of them to the same
plateau.
