Steve DeBerg

San Francisco 49ers

Steve DeBerg was the NFL’s ultimate journeyman. He began his pro career in 1977 with Dallas, which drafted him in the 10th round. He was waived by Dallas and went to San Francisco, where he became a starter under Bill Walsh two seasons later. He is one of only two quarterbacks to start games for six different teams; San Francisco 49ers (1978-1980), Denver Broncos (1981-1983), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1984-1987, 1992, 1993), Kansas City Chiefs (1988-1991), Miami Dolphins (1993), and Atlanta Falcons (1998). He served as backup to such greats as Joe Montana, John Elway, Steve Young and Vinny Testaverde. He never spent more than 64 games with any one team.

DeBerg's best years were with the Chiefs, during which he led the team to two playoff berths and had his best year in 1990 with a 101.2 quarterback rating, passing for 3,444 yards, 23 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. He holds NFL record for being the oldest quarterback to start a game at the age of 44 on October 25, 1998.
