Virgil Carter

Chicago Fire

In 1966, Brigham Young’s Virgil Carter sets NCAA record of 599 yards gained. In the NFL, Carter played for the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Chargers and San Diego Chargers.

In 1974, as a star quarterback for the Bengals, Virgil Carter became available. Carter had played out his option with the team and, in a dispute related to medical care, his NFL contract was voided and he jumped to the WFL. In Carter, the Fire had a proven quarterback and a personality who was already popular in Chicago as a former Bear. He gave the new WFL a degree of credibility, actually sparking a debate in Chicago over whether he or the Bears’ Bobby Douglas was the best quarterback in town (Read Here). Unfortunately, Carter was lost to injury in that first season after he had done a fine job with the Fire. Although playing a shortened season, he finished fourth in the league in total passing yardage and second in touchdown passes.
