Kay Stephenson

Jacksonville Sharks

Kay Stephenson from the University of Florida was the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Sharks in the first game in the history of the WFL vs. the New York Stars. Stephenson, formerly a quarterback with the San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills of the AFL, led the Sharks and shared duties with Reggie Oliver out of Marshall University (now famous for the movie “We Are Marshall). The Sharks season was a disaster from an ownership and funding aspect. The league took over operation of the Sharks on September 22nd.  In October, the Jacksonville Sharks were “suspended” after compiling a 4-10 record. Although the record was poor, the Sharks played exciting football with many close ganes in 1974.

Stephenson was named player personnel director for the new Jacksonville Express in 1975. Kay Stephenson was named the ninth head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 1985, coaching the Bills for three seasons. He led the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football to the World Bowl Championship in 1992. He has also served as an assistant at the University of Arkansas and as a head coach in the CFL.
