Super Bowl XLV- 2011

Green Bay 31   Pittsburgh 25

Every year, it seems, one cartoonist truly captures "the story behind the story" of that year's Super Bowl. Every year, when I find the absolute right cartoon, I think to myself, "That guy gets it!" It's especially difficult in a year when the opposing teams have no animal mascots. The Colts vs. Bears is easy. But the Packers and Steelers both are represented by industries. The story was that of two storied franchsises meeting for all the marbles. In 2011, it was the Wisconsin's State Journal's Phil Hands who captured it best:

For Super Bowl Sunday, I wanted to draw a simple cartoon that summed up this epic matchup between two of the NFL's most storied franchises, and I think this cartoon succeeded in that.

My editor liked this cartoon, but mentioned that it was fairly even-handed.

I disagree.

The Steelers are historic. They have won more Super Bowls than other team in the history, they have a long list of Hall of Fame players and a nation-wide following second only to the Green Bay Packers.

But the Packers transcend historical glory. This organization is the stuff of legends. I mean the Super Bowl trophy is named after one of our own. Fans put their new-born children on the waiting list for season tickets in hopes than some might become available in half a century or so. The team is even owned by the FANS!

So, sure the Steelers are historic, but the Packers are Legendary.

Protecting players from concussions was the big concern in 2010.
