Marvin Hart-Jack Root
July 3, 1905

Although not recognized by all sources as a true heavyweight champion, Marvin Hart (left) was a formidable opponent. His victory over the first light-heavyweight champion, Jack Root (right), sealed his place in history.

In this amazing photo taken in March, 1905, Hart battles Jack Johnson.  Hart won the bout with a decision.  Hart would become champion within months and Johnson a few years later.  The two great champions would have one very important common opponent, Tommy Burns.
