Some thrilling, tragic and memorable 500's from the last 60 years.
On May 30, 1911, at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway, Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500. His average speed
was 74.602 mph and he covered the 500 mile distance in 6:42:08. Harroun
piloted a six cylinder automobile, that ran on solid tires, called the
"Marmon Wasp", named for its sharp-pointed, wasp-like tail. On May 24,
2009, Helio Castroneves of Brazil won the Indianapolis 500. His running
time was 1:55:16 and his average speed was 172.677 mph.
